FANTASTIC REALITIES

American Visionary Art Museum

"Draw something. Take a photo. Join the gallery. A hands-on interactive that put museum visitors' creativity on display - and made the news."

The American Visionary Art Museum commissioned us to build an interactive drawing installation for their Fantastic Realities: Truth Stranger Than Fiction gallery. The goal was simple but powerful: give every museum visitor the chance to become part of the exhibit.

The installation features a touchscreen kiosk paired with a camera and a digital drawing pad. Visitors create a piece of art on the drawing surface, then use the camera to take a photo of themselves or their work. The finished piece - drawing and photo combined - is submitted to a virtual gallery displayed within the exhibit space, letting visitors see their creations alongside the work of everyone else who participated.

To keep the gallery appropriate for the museum environment, we built a server-side moderation system that routes every submission through a verification queue. Museum staff review and approve each piece before it goes live on the gallery wall. The installation was featured on local news coverage of the exhibit, highlighting how the museum was using technology to make art accessible and participatory.
